Contact Information NAME: Emily INSTANT MESSENGER: AIM - QueenLasrs E-MAIL ADDRESS: emilyannestout@gmail TIMEZONE: US/ Mountain [GMT-7] OOC INFO CDJ: EXPERIENCE: I started playing Bethany on GJ, and played her once since, at this journal. I also played her son Eric at PB: Rachael Leigh Cook from the movie Tempo. I've uploaded some of the icons I want to use here. JOURNAL TO BE USED: Basics FULL NAME: Andrea Bethany Moon NICKNAMES: Beth, Andie, Andie-Beth, Mouse. But most people just call her Bethany. AGE: 17 BIRTHDAY: June 25, 1980 BLOOD STATUS: Halfblood - her father is Muggleborn, and her mother comes from the Purkisses, a very mixed-blood family with an eccentric reputation. Family/Relationships PARENTS: MOTHER: Deborah Purkiss.SIBLINGS: Sophia (22), Joseph (20), Benjamin (14), and Simon (12) EXTENDED FAMILY: Doris Purkiss, mad maiden aunt. Andrea Moon, sane maiden aunt and confidant. FRIENDS: Bethany is friends with fellow Hufflepuffs and relatives. She is too hampered by insecurity to be friends with many others - she thinks they all look down on her for not sharing their Houses' characteristics. She needs people who will bring her out of herself without making her feel stupid or insignificant, or like they're just hanging around so everyone will think they're wonderful for befriending such a useless little mouse. Kindness helps. A tendency to brag doesn't, because she feels she has nothing much to brag about. She doesn't like know-it-alls, or very loud people (because they always seem to want her to speak up and act more like them), and cruelty will make her withdraw completely. In short, be gentle. She's very sensitive. SEXUALITY: Timidly interested in boys, but not expecting any to be interested back. SIGNIFICANT OTHER: None (probably ever, she thinks) LIVING ARRANGEMENTS LOCATION: Her family has moved around a lot, but currently live in Glasgow. CURRENT RESIDENCE: A semidetached house full of siblings and covered in cousins. Joey and Sophie don't live with them anymore, having moved on and got their own places, but Benjy and Simon still make plenty of noise so it's still quite rambunctious during the hols. CLASS: Working class. Education HOUSE/YEAR: Hufflepuff, currently 7th year - due to graduate June 1998 Politics LOYALTY/ALLIANCE: Terrified. Neutral out of fear. Even if she really thought anyone could save her and bring her dad back, she'd support them in thought, but never in deed - she doesn't want to die. She won't like the Death Eaters that she meets, and she'll be too afraid of the Carrows to even hate them properly. She wants her dad back, but what can she do about it? Right now it's more important to keep her head down and survive. POLITICAL VIEWS: Bethany doesn't care about blood purity and has no problem with muggles and wizards dating or getting married - her father is a muggleborn, after all, and the muggle side of her family is far more sane and fun to be around than the magical side. But she's not at all likely to say that aloud. If questioned, she'll say exactly what she's supposed to - that she's ashamed of her mother for marrying a piece of mudblood scum. She won't say it loudly, and she'll hide her face behind her hair, but she's working her way up to sincerity. Appearance APPEARANCE: Bethany stands at an unimpressive five-foot-three, just slightly shorter than average. She has an average build (but slightly less lacking in chest than hips), slightly darker brown hair and eyes than average, and is just dull, dull, dull. In her opinion. In truth, Bethany is fairly pretty, with delicate, pixieish features and good colouring. But she doesn't at all know how to use her looks, and it's really due to her hair that anyone would think of her as attractive. Her hair is thick, long and curly even without her doing much to it, and perfect for hiding behind. She doesn't stand out. She doesn't want to - her movements are quiet and subdued, occasionally twitchy. She generally looks and sounds shy, unremarkable, and like she wants you to leave her alone but would have a hard time actually saying that. Habits: She chews on her nails so often she hardly notices it unless it's pointed out. She also fidgets with her hair, rubbing it against her lower lip when she's thinking. She's always writing things and then crossing them out again, because she constantly second-guesses herself. She hides behind her hair, half-raises her hand in classes and then says "Nevermind" when called on, and spends most of her free time in her dorm or a corner of the common room, reading. She loves to read, because what's written in books can't hurt you. Personality WAND: Ten inches, birch and dragon heartstring. Whippy (overly responsive) and takes a very delicate touch, though it's quite stubborn if anyone else tries to use it. BOGGART: Everything. She's afraid of her Aunt Doris (sometimes), Professor Snape, Professor McGonagall, dragons, alligators, really large birds, really large dogs, etc, etc, etc. Actually, the boggart would probably turn into... a boggart, which would be awfully confusing for everyone concerned. PATRONUS: There is very little chance of her mustering the confidence to even consider casting one of these, but if she did, it would definitely be a mouse. LIKES: Poetry (especially Robert Burns). Her cat, Nicky (Nicodemus). Knitting (it's so soothing). Reading in general. History of Magic. Cheese pasties. Cheese sandwiches. Cheese and spring onion sandwiches (they're just mouthwatering). Cheese in general, apparently. Her favourite blue jumper. At one point or another, all the boys in her year and House. Heights, though not flying - she used to love going to the Astronomy Tower before, you know, Dumbledore fell off it and died. DISLIKES: Emily Dickinson (dashes peppered everywhere, it's just dreadful). Hermione Granger (she is far too perfect for anyone's good). Professor Binns. Being the only non-Ravenclaw in her family. When people write in capitals to emphasize a point (it's so vulgar-looking). All her insecurities and nervous habits. Feeling less than other people. Being afraid. Leaving things undone. STRENGTHS: Good writer (especially essays), excellent at History of Magic (though she still can't stay awake in class). Intelligent, though she doesn't believe she is. Strong family, very loyal to people who care about her and show it. Decent knitter. Works well by herself. WEAKNESSES: Poor self-confidence. Doesn't stand up for herself. Doesn't generally stand up for other people. Trouble overcoming fear. Afraid of a lot. Doesn't work well in groups - she tends to let other people override her opinions and objections. DETAILED PERSONALITY: Your character's personality. Particularly try to hit on their driving motivations and tell us how they've developed or show opportunities for development during the game. Try to aim for at least three solid paragraphs. History CHILDHOOD: Bethany was born and raised in Northern Wales, but her family moved to Glasgow when she was ten. This came as a great relief to her, as her former school had had weekly Welsh lessons and she was always teased because "Beth" meant "what". She was part of a large family, three brothers and a sister, which was in turn just one branch of two family trees that just so happened to specialize in large families. As the middle child, she was never wanting in company and nearly always wanting for privacy, but as much as she huffed and complained about her little brothers bursting into her and her sister's room early in the morning, and much as her sister Sophia complained about having to share a room with a sister five years younger and prone to getting into her makeup, she loved her family and wouldn't have traded it for the world. Some branches and twigs of her personal family tree were a bit easier to get along with than others, of course. Her mum's family, the Purkisses, were a weird bunch - the sort that people politely called eccentric or bluntly called bonkers, who read the Quibbler and actually believed it, and who thought soaking in a tub of crushed eels was a splendid way to cure yourself of whooping cough. The Moons were muggles apart from her dad and their branch, and largely sane. HOGWARTS. She looked forward to going to Hogwarts with mixed eagerness and dread for as long as she could remember, especially after her brother, who she's close to, started there. Her sorting into Hufflepuff shocked her and made her think she wasn't smart enough for Ravenclaw. She was depressed about it for a month and still feels slightly out of place in Hufflepuff, although she wouldn't really want to switch houses at this point. When the war first broke out, Bethany was constantly worrying about it. She had horrible nightmares about her family being slaughtered and seeing the Dark Mark above her house. Constant owls from her brother only made things worse because she was sure each one would be the last. It got to the point where her housemates told Professor Sprout she wasn't sleeping. Professor Sprout sat her down and had a long talk with her and then sent her to Madame Pomfrey, who gave her a sleeping draught and her roommates strict instructions to make sure she drank some every night. Eventually life went on, and she became so caught up in worrying about little things like essays and exams that she didn't have much time for gruesome nightmares. After a while she began pretending the war and everything to do with it didn't exist. But then Hogwarts was attacked, and she and some other housemates were dragged out of bed by Ernie Macmillan. She saw Death Eaters fighting Aurors and people shooting off curses left and right. And then she found out Dumbledore was dead, and she couldn't ignore it anymore. So she got a subscription to the Prophet, and one to the Quibbler as well, on the off chance that if they were right about Harry Potter, they might be right about some other things concerning the war. She makes herself read every issue thoroughly regardless of how much schoolwork she has. Occasionally she forces herself to have tortured little conversations about it. But that's about the extent of her involvement, for which she is grateful. Samples JOURNAL ENTRY: RP SAMPLE: |

[Private] Susan was eating breakfast with Justin again today. And they sat together at lunch on Thursday. I wonder if that's where she was on Hogsmeade? She said she had plans she'd forgotten, but I thought we might meet up after. [/Private] So apparently Donaghan Tremlett of the Weird Sisters is getting married. For real this time, he says. |

[Private] ...The flaunting flow'rs our gardens yield, High shelt'ring woods and wa's maun shield; But thou, beneath the random bield O' clod or stane, Adorns the histie stibble-field, Unseen, alane. ...Ev'n thou who mourn'st the Daisy's fate, That fate is thine -- no distant date; Stern Ruin's ploughshare drives, elate, Full on thy bloom, Till crush'd beneath the furrow's weight, Shall by thy doom! [/Private] I slept in really late this morning, and when I woke up I thought it was Hogsmeade and I'd missed the trip. I didn't realize until I got down to breakfast that it was next weekend, not this one. I guess I'll go to the library, then; I've got some studying left to do. |

But I don't care what Ernie says or if he believes Potter. It's crazy to think that anything unusual's going on. If You-Know-Who was back, there would be fighting and that sort of thing. People would be dying. Besides, Joey doesn't believe it either. [/Private] It's nice out today, isn't it? The lake looks so inviting - or at least as inviting as it ever looks if you know the squid's in there. I took a walk after breakfast this morning There was a group of people down on the Quidditch pitch, but I didn't stop to see what they were doing. The professors are really loading us up, aren't they? I'm not sure I'll have time to go on walks anymore this year. |

[Private] I don't care what anyone says, I think Professor Umbridge is just fine. She's definitely better than half the people I've had before, Professor "Moody" made us practise the Imperius Curse on each other. That's illegal and wrong even if it wasn't illegal Anyway, I'd much rather read than have people practise curses on me, especially ones that make me do whatever people want me to do. Everyone should just stop whinging about it, it's not like it'll hurt us to not hex each other all the time for a whole year. Maybe I'll go up to the tower tonight. If I go early enough maybe no one will be snogging yet. [/Private] The first week is always so hard. I'm glad it's the weekend now. |

( Private ) Now I'm wishing I hadn't gone to get my supplies earlier after all - we got a lot of the books, like Standard Spells (which was pretty obvious), but we still have to go back for the Defense text and a few others. The Defense one sounds kind of interesting, actually. Different to what we've done so far, at least |

[Private] I don't understand why Hannah had to invite Luna Lovegood. I was really looking forward to having a nice time with everyone, but then she showed up. Hannah has to realize she's not normal, right? Then why does she talk to her and invite her to things, and play word games And it's not like anyone could really be noticed with Lovegood around. I shouldn't have even gone, even if Justin was going to be there. I don't understand Theodore Nott either. [/Private] I got my books and things at Diagon Alley yesterday. It's really amazing how crowded it gets this time of year; we had to duck in Madam Malkin's to escape. And then Mum made me get new dress robes even though there's absolutely no chance of my having to use them |

Hannah's party thing is tomorrow. I wonder what I should wear? I'm trying to decide, but it's hard to know without knowing who's going to be there. I wish I'd been paying more attention when Hannah mentioned it first, but I didn't think I was invited so I thought it didn't matter. And now I can't find where she was talking about it. I wish I Light and airy, I guess, since it's summer. At least I have a tan. Or is that bad now? |

I took a nap today, and I had a dream that it was the first day of the term and we had new house elves. But we had to wait in line for our food, and I filled up my plate (it all looked really good, and I was hungry) and then left it at my normal spot. Then I went and got dessert, but when I got back I couldn't find my plate, and the food was all gone, and then everyone else was gone too and I was starving. And then I woke up. That was a really stupid dream. |

[Private] I didn't know Cedric. Not really, anyway. I talked to him a couple times and he picked up my quill once when I dropped it, and I thanked him. That was kind of what the talking to him was like, too. He was nice, I guess, Maybe I just won't talk about it. [/Private] Benjy's really enjoying being home. I mean, everyone is, but you know. There's nothing like family, really. Even if Mum does start us on cleaning everything. |
